-- mnarani aid helping special needs children in kilifi county, kenya skip to content menu menu home the schools konjora konjora second classroom mnarani tree planting matsangoni matsangoni water project projects matsangoni boarding unit for special needs konjora water harvesting konjora water & toilet project costs bag farming bag farming information food security lunch program news mnarani primary tree planting projects update konjora water tank base facebook posts various videos contact & donations supporters register log in mnarani aid child protection policy home mnarani aid is a charity which is dedicated to helping the children in the special needs unts in government primary schools in kilifi county, kenya. it was formed in 2008 as a charitable trust to improve the facilities for the pupils of mnarani primary school. having brought this school up to a satisfactory standard mnarani aid transferred its attentions to matsangoni primary. again this school has been tremendously improved. the secondary school of mnarani has also been helped with it, electric power and various teaching materials. this school also now has satisfactory facilities including a science laboratory. when we visit the schools we discuss with the headmasters and parents which projects they would like to complete with the funds we have available. after the work has been carried out we photograph the results and obtain the receipts from the suppliers etc. in this way, we know that all the funds available are spent on the schools with no administration costs. so now the charity has moved on and is concentrating its work on assisting the special needs children’s units at mnarani , matsangoni and konjora . our aim is to assist the teachers in those units to give the children as much help as they can to enable them to become of some worth to their families and community. this may range from, for those most challenged teaching them simple household tasks such as sweeping the floor or making up the sl eeping arraignments (beds?) to for the more able learning to keep livestock, goats, chickens or rabbits and to plant and look after maize and vegetables. we are doing this by funding the teachers to learn best practice and to continue their professional development and by providing any equipment required; such as tools, chicken runs and secure pens for the goats. the plan is that these enterprises will become self-sustaining by the selling of the surplus produce and stock. we also finance trips that will help the children’s development, for example sports competitions. we also try to provide a lunch programme to encourage the parents to send the children to school. these parents normally consider that these children are not worth spending any of the family’s scarce resources on, a point which i can understand. so if we can get them to school by offering a free lunch (maize porridge) then teach them some skills, then hopefully they will not be seen as a drain on their family and community. of course for this to succeed we need a regular monthly income. we are lucky in that we have some supporters who do this with amounts by bank standing order monthly; but of course we need more. £5.00 goes a long way in kenya. with more income we can encourage more children to come to school. as we grow the costs of providing teachers is not a problem as the kenyan government allocates one special needs trained teacher per twelve pupils, just not the equipment for them to carry out their work effectively. mnarani aid is registered with the uk charity commissioners no: 1141872 and the uk hm revenue & customs, which allows the opportunity of reclaiming tax under the gift aid scheme. the trust is currently supported by amongst others;
